Pirangi Beach seen from above, in Parnamirim

Parnamirim borders Natal to the south and has some of the best-known sights of the South Coast: the Barreira do Inferno cliffs, Cotovelo Beach and the Pirangi Cashew Tree in Pirangi do Norte — the largest tree in the world by area, listed in the Guinness Book of Records.

Things to do in Parnamirim

Parnamirim brings together history (the Barreira do Inferno museum), nature (cliffs and the Pirangi Cashew Tree) and beaches, all on the way out of Natal toward the South Coast.

Pirangi, Parnamirim

World's Largest Cashew Tree

Listed in the Guinness Book of Records, the Pirangi Cashew Tree is a single tree that, because of a genetic mutation, grows sideways instead of up — its branches touch the ground, take root and have kept spreading for more than 150 years. Today it covers an area equal to more than 70 blocks of an ordinary city.

Local tip

Try the cashew nuts and cashew juice sold at the entrance — picked from the tree itself.

Cotovelo Beach

Cotovelo Beach hides one of the most beautiful viewpoints on the South Coast: cliffs ranging from yellow to deep red, set between coastal scrub and the blue sea. It's a quick stop, but a breathtaking one, halfway between Natal and Pirangi.

Local tip

The viewpoint at the top of the cliff is the right spot for photos — be careful near the edge, especially with children.

Barreira do Inferno

Tall reddish cliffs that drop almost straight into the sea give this stretch of the South Coast its name, and it's also home to the Barreira do Inferno Launch Center, the first space center in Latin America. The small museum tells that story next to one of the most impressive viewpoints in the region.

Local tip

The cliffs turn even more orange when the sun is low — pair it with the stop at Cotovelo Beach on the same tour.
