Maracajaú
The most famous natural pools in the state: warm, crystal-clear water, perfect for snorkeling among coral reefs and colorful schools of fish.
The name Maracajaú comes from the Tupi word maracaiá-u. The village was founded around 1832 by fishermen and sugar mill owners from neighboring Ceará-Mirim, and for generations it lived almost entirely from fishing. Today it's a district of Maxaranguape with about 2,000 residents, and tourism has become the main activity in an area nicknamed the "Brazilian Caribbean".
